About the blog

The idea for this blog came way back in the summer of 2001, when I was finishing my Master's degree at the Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University. I was in Washington, DC. I was alone, attempting to finish my capstone project in political reporting, all while my wife and children were back in Arizona. I was taking the Metro to where our politics bureau is, when a familiar phrase from the scriptures came in my mind:
"Thus saith the Lord God: I will give unto the children of men line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little.."

I thought about that as I took the Orange Line into the city, watching the train follow a line to its destination. I watched it again as I saw people in lines, trying to make transfers to other trains in the District. I saw many people on this particular day with Washington Nationals and Washington Redskins hats, and thought about lines on the athletics fields.

And that's when it hit me: My life, at least, is dominated by lines.

Whether it's lines in regular life, growing religiously line by line, or enjoying the sports I love so much, they're all defined by lines.

And that's what my blog is seeking to be: a look into the lines of life.

If you've followed me on twitter, you know I don't stick to just one subject. I'll share a bunch of links I find interesting, have a conversation about religion, and live-tweet a game I'm watching all in the same day — sometimes in the same hour.

This is what this blog will be: sports. news. religion. In a word, life.

I hope you enjoy it. I'm excited to hear from any readers I eventually get. I believe that we all have something of value to add to the conversation. I believe in the "marketplace of ideas".  I rarely delete contrary views to mine on Facebook, unless they're incredibly offensive. Feel free to comment here.
